LA VOZ DE MI GENTE | 2025 | Photography Installation | Grand Rapids Art Museum
Project Overview
Born in Puerto Rico and based in Grand Rapids, I created LA VOZ DE MI GENTE to reconnect the diaspora with the island's living culture, and to reconnect with my own. Over three years, I traveled to Puerto Rico to photograph and interview twelve artists, dancers, musicians, painters, tattoo artists, and designers, and built the exhibition from their portraits and stories.
I ran the project end to end, securing $20,000 in funding and managing the budget, permitting, and vendor relations, alongside a coalition including the Puerto Rican Cultural Committee, Grandville Avenue Arts & Humanities, and the Hispanic Center. Through a fabrication partnership with GRCC's FutureTech program, the buildout became a welding student's first paid work opportunity. The exhibition was featured at the Grand Rapids Art Museum during ArtPrize 2025, earned seven news features, and received the Artista Latino Award.
